By September in Dubai, your hair has been through it. Between beach holidays, pool days, dry flights, constant air-con and relentless heat, it’s not just your skin that’s feeling parched. Your scalp and strands are, too.

“The effects become most visible toward the end of peak heat,” says haircare expert Miriam Quevedo. “We see heightened hair shedding, especially in fine or light hair, more prominent receding areas, widened partings and overall density loss.” From a trichological perspective, the scalp’s microenvironment is likely off balance. Clogged with residue, inflamed from UV, or stripped of its protective barrier. The hair fibre itself may be dull, brittle, or more porous after sun, saltwater, and styling damage.

Now is the time to reset.

Signs You Need a Hair Detox
➼ Increased shedding or weak roots.
➼ Greasy roots but dry, frizzy ends.
➼ Sensitivity, itchiness or flakiness on the scalp.
➼ Flat, dull, or rough texture.
➼ Colour that fades fast or looks uneven.

Sound familiar? According to Miriam, these are all signs that both your scalp and strands are in recovery mode. “Breakage, dullness, dryness, oiliness, or weak roots may stem from your scalp,” she explains. “But the hair fibre also needs targeted nourishment to regain elasticity and shine.”

Post-Holiday Recovery Rituals
Unlike your face, your scalp doesn’t get a cleanse, tone, and moisturise routine, but it should. Here’s how Miriam recommends treating heat-stressed hair in three phases:

1. Cleanse + Rebalance

Start with a gentle exfoliant to remove buildup from sweat, SPF, dry shampoo and pollution. “When the scalp is blocked, oxygen can’t reach the follicle,” she says. Follow with a sulphate-free shampoo that purifies without stripping and helps reset oil production.

2. Repair + Rehydrate

“Use conditioners and masks that can be applied to the scalp, not just the ends,” says Miriam. This helps replenish moisture at the root, reinforce elasticity, and restore comfort to sun-exposed or sensitised skin. Apply a treatment oil or leave-in to damp hair to seal in hydration, protect against breakage, and boost shine.

3. Fortify + Future-Proof

Look for nighttime treatments and scalp mists rich in peptides, prebiotics, and antioxidants to strengthen the follicle and calm inflammation. “Daily use of mists with encapsulated glacial water helps maintain hydration and protect the scalp’s microbiome,” she explains. Ideal in dry environments or after holiday travel.

It’s never too late to start.
A good detox isn’t just about reversing damage, it’s about creating the conditions for stronger, glossier, more resilient hair long after summer fades.
