For Lucy Goff, that question has shaped everything. As the founder of Lyma, her work sits at the intersection of science, skin longevity and lived experience, questioning an industry driven by instant results and surface-level repair. Why Damage Isn’t the Same as Repair
“Most people don’t realise that the majority of beauty technology works by damaging the skin,” Lucy explains. Heat-based devices, radiofrequency, microneedling and even non-ablative lasers all rely on controlled injury to stimulate collagen. The issue, she says, is not collagen itself, but the quality of collagen produced through damage.
“In youthful skin, the ratio of collagen should be around 70 per cent type I and 30 per cent type III. When skin is damaged, the body prioritises speed over quality. One of Lucy’s biggest frustrations with the beauty and wellness space is the illusion of choice it creates. “It’s highly unregulated. Private clinical studies don’t mean much. Anyone can produce results. The only thing that matters is peer-reviewed, published evidence.”
Even then, she acknowledges how difficult it is for consumers to navigate. In a market where everything claims to work, meaningful innovation is easily lost. “You’re not buying a product for how it looks. You’re buying it for something you can’t see, what your skin will look like in 12 weeks’ time.”
This is reflected in Lyma’s audience. Many users are women who are no longer interested in chasing instant transformation, but instead want to invest in skin longevity, function and resilience, particularly as collagen loss, hormonal change and cumulative ageing become more visible.
Lyma’s customer base reflects this reality. Most users are over 45, when ageing becomes measurable. Younger users tend to come for acne scarring, another area where regeneration matters more than surface glow.

When asked what advice she would give women trying to take control of their health in a world full of noise, perfectionism and conflicting information, Lucy is clear. “Learn how to read peer-reviewed evidence. It is not glamorous advice. But it is empowering. “If you understand what works and what doesn’t, you stop wasting money, time and energy. You stop chasing hype.”
