Each month, Beautilist spotlights a niche fragrance that feels deeply personal. One that tells a story, stirs emotion, or captures a fleeting moment in time. This edition, we meet Kara Davis, the New Jersey native and VP of Global Marketing at Kayali, who shares the scent that stole her heart and never let go.
The Discovery
It happened in Ibiza. “I was there for a wedding,” Kara recalls. “The crew and I were just rambling along the streets and popped into a small boutique.” That’s when she encountered Mad et Len Red Musc, a scent so visceral, so vivid, she gasped. Hand to forehead. Immediate swoon. “I ran to the cash counter,” she says, laughing.
This wasn’t typical behaviour for Kara. “Mind you, I am not an impulsive buyer when it comes to fragrance. We have to do the dance. Get to know each other. Plus, I never trust a blotter. You have to try on skin and clothes to really ‘test’ performance.”
But Red Musc was different. “I knew after the very first spritz that it was an instant love for me. And it continues to be.”

The Scent
“It’s simply a gorgeous musk scent that resonates so beautifully on skin,” Kara explains. “It’s comforting but still powerful in its own way.” Unlike loud or cloying fragrances, she prefers a quiet confidence. “An intimate scent bubble,” she calls it. The kind that makes people lean in.
“They get a whisper of your scent trail as you walk by or when you hug them goodbye. Then they say, ‘What the heck are you wearing?!’ I get the best compliments when I wear this. And if you know me, telling me I smell good is top tier!”
The Story
The scent carries her back to Ibiza. To joy, to spontaneity, to the kind of memories that never fade. “So many core memories have followed since that first spritz over seven years ago,” she shares.
Today, it’s a mainstay in her personal ritual. “It’s usually a daily wear for me. Like second skin. If I’m layering, I love using this as a base.”

Why Niche Matters
For Kara, niche fragrances offer something more meaningful. “The beauty of most niche fragrance brands is the intention and the storytelling. As a consumer, I love knowing the inspiration. Really going beyond what’s inside the bottle.”
Still, she’s the first to admit her collection is expansive and ever-changing. “I am the WORST person to ask for a signature scent. My fragrance selection depends on my mood, and I easily wear anywhere from two to six fragrances at a time. This is what happens when you hang around Mona Kattan all day long!”
Her best advice? “Wear whatever makes you feel good. And the best way to discover that is to keep trying fragrances, keep smelling, keep flexing your scent muscle. The more I smell, the more I fall in love. But I also start identifying what it is about a fragrance that I love so much. An iris or musk scent HATES to see me coming!”

“Your fragrance is an extension of YOU. I’m just as intentional with my perfume as I am with what shoes I’m going to wear or how I decide to do my hair.”
Seductive, smoky, and anything but ordinary. It’s time to smell beyond the bottle.
