They pollinate our food, support entire ecosystems, and have been revered by civilisations from Ancient Egypt to the present day. And still, their influence is often underestimated, until you notice how seamlessly honey bees appear across your kitchen shelf, beauty rituals and even wellness routines.

Across the globe, these small but mighty insects are the lifeline of biodiversity, ensuring that plants, from wildflowers to crops, can flourish. And yet, their numbers are in quiet decline. Climate change, pesticide use, habitat loss, and disease are pushing bee populations to the edge, threatening to unravel systems far beyond the hive.

Global Honey Bee Facts

➼ Bees pollinate one in every three bites of food we eat.

➼ A single bee can visit up to 5,000 flowers a day.

➼ There are over 20,000 bee species, though only a few produce honey.

➼ Honey never expires. It naturally preserves itself.

➼ In the Middle East, bees are native and deeply rooted in ancient agricultural systems.

➼ In the UAE, honey bees thrive despite the desert climate thanks to specialised local keepers and nectar-rich blooms like sidr and acacia.

Fear Factor: Why Bees Get a Bad Reputation

Before we dive into rituals and remedies, let’s clear up a common misconception.

  1. Honey bees are non-aggressive.
  2. They don’t swarm your food like wasps. They’re after nectar, not your lunch.
  3. A sting is a last resort, and for the bee, it’s fatal. These are creatures of calm, not conflict.

Know Your Locals

Think bees can’t survive in the desert? Think again.

🐝 Apis florea, the Arabian dwarf honeybee, is native to the region. It builds delicate open-air combs and is often mistaken for a pest. Greater awareness could help protect this fragile species from unnecessary extermination.

🐝 Apis mellifera, the European honeybee, is widely used in UAE beekeeping but struggles in the extreme heat. To address this, efforts are underway in Hatta to develop a UAE-adapted honeybee, one better suited to the local climate, with stronger resilience and higher honey yields.

Regional Honeys to Try

🍯 Sidr Honey – Rich, amber, and antibacterial. Harvested from the ancient Sidr tree, it’s bold in flavour and revered for its healing properties.

🍯 Samar (Acacia) Honey – Light, floral, and known for its anti-inflammatory benefits. A gentle all-rounder perfect for everyday use.

🍯 Ghaf Honey – Subtly aromatic with woody undertones, this variety is produced from the UAE’s national tree and reflects the resilience of desert ecosystems.

🍯 Mangrove Honey – A coastal rarity with smoky, mineral-rich complexity. Collected from the UAE’s mangrove forests, it offers a distinctive depth.

🍯 Multiflora Honey – A wild, seasonal blend that shifts in flavour and colour depending on what’s in bloom, no two jars are the same.

The Sweet Science of Honey

Honey is antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, enzyme-rich, and antioxidant-loaded. It heals, hydrates, soothes, and softens. It’s a pantry staple and a skin saviour. A cold remedy and a glow booster. One of the few ingredients that bridges beauty and health with equal power. Even now, modern science is only just catching up to what ancient cultures instinctively knew: honey is liquid gold.

Support the Buzz (Even From Your Balcony)

➼ Plant for pollinators: Choose year-round flowering species like basil, rosemary, moringa, desert rose, lantana, sunflowers, and ghaf.

➼ Skip the sprays: Avoid pesticides and herbicides, especially at dawn and dusk when bees are most active.

➼ Provide water: A shallow dish filled with pebbles gives bees a place to land and drink.

➼ Let wild corners stay wild: Native greenery supports more life than ornamental perfection.
